~ Western Poetry from a true son of the American West ~ Staring into a campfire on a starry night as he listens to the coyotes howl and the cattle lowing gives a cowboy time to think, room to put his thoughts to paper, a chance to sing what's in his heart... Join award-winning author John D. Nesbitt as he shares 32 poems of Western life including Wild Rose of Wyoming, Under Cloak of Night, Boss of Bottomline Ranch, To the North of Old Cheyenne, Blue Horse Mesa, and Thorns on the Rose.

Thorns on the Rose Western Poetry John D Nesbitt 9781482332186 Books

In this wistful yet beautifully poignant collection of western poetry, I read "Early Spring Ride," the fourth poem , during a late March blizzard--under a quilt my grandma made. I had a hot cup of black coffee, and it was the perfect time and place, a rare juxtaposition of real life lived and the printed page where Nesbitt resides, sock footed, with cars parked, eating left-over chicken alone, and listening to Gene Autry.

When the snow is done, should we visit the Bronco Bar, or pay a visit to the dark house and its dark memories?

The entries here cover a number of years but are threaded together with a graceful hand familiar with loneliness but skilled at finding sufficiency. Nesbitt's poems are not restrained but rather, deftly contained, declarative of a basic ability to live in a world where she is gone, where she is here, where love doesn't call for trade-offs, where love's not measured like the dirt...

You see, I could riff on Nesbitt's words for a long time. If you're keen on any poetry at all, you will too. If you're not, this is the perfect introduction. You'll find memory, hope and celebratory songs. I especially like "Blue Horse Mesa," a blood-churning duet, "Boss of the Bottomline Ranch" (He walks like a duck with a backache...), and the title piece, "Thorns on the Rose."

If you've ever seen the warm red beacon of Officer Miller in your rear view mirror...

If you've never killed a man by light of day, (but done so under cover of night)...

If you won't live in LA (but even if you do)...

This is the stuff. Highly recommended!

Thorns on the Rose Western Poetry John D Nesbitt 9781482332186 Books Reviews

Well known for his traditional Westerns, his Western-mysteries, and his noir-tinged short stories, Spur Award-winning author John D. Nesbitt has come out with a fine new offering with this collection of poetry, THORNS ON THE ROSE WESTERN POETRY.

Divided into three sections, the book gives readers a number of selections detailing varied approaches on the persnickety nature of love -- the newness of it, the loss of it, the lack of it, and the yearning for it. There are also a number of "songs" that the reader can't help but read aloud and in tempo.

Some of the selections herein are whimsical, some ruminative, some entice the reader to join in and whoop it up. And throughout, I swear as I read I smelled campfire smoke and heard a soft guitar strumming in the shadows. That's reason enough for me to reread THORNS ON THE ROSE again soon.
